Being Happy - Part 6
Many people spend their whole lives punishing themselves mentally and physically for what they believe to be their own wrong doings. Some overeat, some under eat, some drink to forget, some systematically destroy all their relationships, some live a life of poverty or sickness. These people believe that they are guilty of wrong doings and don't deserve to be healthy and happy. If you are still feeling guilty about something that you have done ages ago, I feel that you have put yourself through enough unhappiness already so why prolong the torture? Even if you were to feel guilty for another year or two, it wouldn't help or in any way improve the situation. Throw out the guilt now. It's not always easy to throw it out as maintaining a healthy mind takes a lot of effort just like it takes to maintain a healthy body. But it is definitely worth the effort. Try it now and be happy again.
Blaming others and feeling guilty are equally dangerous and destructive. While we blame God, blame others and blame ourselves, we are avoiding the real issue which is to do something about the problem. It is OUR CHOICE whether we get on with our life and live in the present or we can chain ourselves to grudges and upsets of the past. When we can't forgive and forget, we are actually reliving those unhappy moments over and over again. Do you really want to lead such a life for the rest of your time on earth?
